Animal Science Committees
Activity
Coordinator
Roles &
Responsibilities
Term:
three years, renewable
must be an active member of the Animal Science Committee (ASC) (refer to ASC Member Roles & Responsibilities)
in most instances, must have at least one year of experience on the committee
must be at least 21 years-old
ASC
may choose to have two people serve as co-leaders and share the
responsibilities of the Activity Coordinator
- one of the co-leaders must be at least 21-years old, the
other may be 19 or 20 years-old
time commitment will vary depending on the committee but is estimated at 40 to 60 hours per year for smaller programs, and over 500 hours per year for more complex programs
Role:
work closely with ASC Members and Staff Liaison to develop and implement an educational program for Maine 4-H members interested in a particular animal species
Responsibilities:
call committee meetings and serve as chairperson at committee meetings
in collaboration with the Staff Liaison
- support committee members in developing, implementing, and
evaluating educational programs that include the Targeting Life Skills model
- support good communications among committee members and
between the ASC and the State 4‑H Office (S4HO)
work with the committee treasurer and members to
prepare an annual budget
- work with the committee treasurer to ensure accurate and
complete financial records and timely reporting to the S4HO
work with the committee treasurer to determine the amount, if any, of ESE participation fees to be paid by ESE team members
work with the Staff Liaison and S4HO to ensure that all team members have paid, or made arrangements to pay, ESE participation fees, if any, prior to departure
attend ESE and provide leadership for the team, or designate a committee member to serve in that role
work with Staff Liaison and committee members to recruit new ASC members as needed; each ASC should include at least one youth member for every three adult members
coordinate the work of subcommittees, if any
coordinate events planned by the committee
- assist in publicizing events and activities through
appropriate channels
represent the ASC at meetings of the ASC Steering Committee
represent Maine as a member of the New England ESE 4-H Committee
be able to address conflicts that arise related to the program and events conducted by the committee
Nomination and Re-nomination Process:
nomination can be made by any member of the committee, including the current Activity Coordinator(s), and occurs prior to the Fall ASC meeting
nomination must be submitted by October 15 to the committee's Staff Liaison
Staff Liaison reviews the nomination, consults with the Extension educator or Extension professional in the county in which the volunteer is enrolled, and if approved, submits it to the current members of the committee at the Fall ASC meeting
committee members vote on the nomination; majority rules
terms expire after three years; re-nomination follows the same process
nominations that are made at other times of the year will follow the same process but will be voted on at the next regularly scheduled committee meeting
