Maine 4-H Animal Science Committees
Staff Liaison
Roles & Responsibilities
Role:
work with an Animal Science Committee (ASC) to develop and implement an educational program for Maine 4-H members interested in a particular animal species
provide advice, guidance, and support to ASC Activity Coordinator(s) and members
serve as contact with appropriate UMCE Specialists
Responsibilities:
provide oversight and leadership to ASC members
be the primary contact for ASC members when they have questions or concerns about the program that the Activity Coordinator is unable to answer
review and approve (or not) nominations of new and renewing ASC members
and the Activity Coordinator
- support the committee in working towards broad county representation on
the committee
support good communications among ASC members and between the ASC and the State 4‑H Office (S4HO)
support ASC members in developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that include the Targeting Life Skills model
assist the ASC in publicizing events and activities through appropriate channels
provide advice and support regarding fund-raising to support the ASC's program
work with the ASC Treasurer to ensure accurate and complete financial records and timely reporting to the S4HO
collaborate with ASC members in conducting try-outs for and taking a team
to Eastern States Exposition (ESE), including but not limited to:
- determine the process for selecting team members
- work with ASC members and the S4HO, assisting with making arrangements
for transportation of team members and animals to ESE
- work with the Activity Coordinator to ensure team members pay ESE
participation fees, if any, or make arrangements for payment, prior to departure
- attend ESE, or, in coordination with the State Coordinator, make
arrangements for another UMCE staff member to do so (at least one UMCE staff
member should be at ESE whenever Maine teams are present – by prior arrangement,
one person can cover more than one team), and while there:
- meet and greet the team(s) as they arrive on site
- serve as the primary UMCE contact for team members, ASC members, and
chaperones
- check-in at the ESE office at least once a day
- ensure that the team(s) and the ESE office knows how to contact you at
all times
- be present, visible, and available to participate in and represent UMCE
in activities and events
- assist team members, ASC members, and chaperones in resolving disputes
and handling emergency situations
