Welcome to Somerset County Extension Office… Somerset County, incorporated in 1809, is one of the few inland areas of the state that can boast outstanding natural resources, a growing tourism industry and a productive working forest. The initial outflow of the Kennebec River offers some of the best freshwater fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting that is available anywhere in Maine. One of three state-designated scenic highways, Route 201 parallels the Kennebec River and offers views of mountain ranges, the river and Wyman Lake. Somerset County is known for its unique Wire Bridge, historic Lakewood Theater, the Margaret Chase Smith Library, and the famous Skowhegan Indian sculpture by Bernard Langlais.
