4-H Youth GIS/GPS
Maine 4-H GIS Program
This is a fun and highly interactive experience where youth learn to use technology while doing really cool community service projects, like community mapping which leads youth to enjoy outdoor activities, a time of adventure and exploration. Another fun activity is Geocashing.
What are GIS and GPS?
GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computer-based system for storing, updating, analyzing, displaying, and manipulating spatial data – information about places on the planet. These can be hand held units even units that are now outfitted in cars and recreational vehicles.
GPS (Global Positioning System) is a constellation of satellites that allow users of GPS receivers to locate their position on Earth’s surface. They can also be used to collect spatially-referenced data to be uses with GIS.
For more information on how your group can participate in the Maine 4-H GIS program, contact your local extension office (link extension office to county offices).
