Updated List of Required Immunizations for 4-H Horses in Maine, April 9, 2007
The State 4-H Office is adding two immunizations to the required list of vaccinations for horses attending 4-H events in Maine this year. Horses brought to 4-H events will need to have a veterinarian’s certificate of vaccination for EVH-1 (rhinopneumonitis) and equine influenza. This new ruling is in response to the statement issued by Dr. Donald Hoenig, State Veterinarian, who has recommended this action.
A veterinarian’s certificate for immunization for rabies and a negative Coggins test within in the past three years and one year for horses coming from out-of-state are the other requirements for horse attending 4-H events in Maine. Please note that the state requirement for a Coggins test on animals entering from out-of-state has changed from having the test within six months to 12 months.
Proof of vaccination should be listed on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (required for all horses entering the State of Maine) or on a certificate of vaccination signed by the owner’s practicing veterinarian. (Please remember that any horse entering the State also needs to have a negative Coggins test within the previous 12 months.)
