Maine 4-H Core Principles
Maine 4-H Youth Development programs are research-based and founded on the
principles of positive youth development.
Our educational programs focus on:
Science, engineering, and technology tied to agriculture, the environment and our communities;
Healthy lifestyles tied to informed decision-making and action for health and safety;
Citizenship tied to youth involvement with government and other institutions;
Sustainable lifestyles and communities tied to ecological literacy and responsible choices.
Our youth can expect the opportunity to:
Be valued and contributing members of their clubs and communities (belonging)
Identify and meet goals for their own hands-on learning (mastery)
Take meaningful learning and leadership roles (independence)
Engage in community service (generosity)
Volunteers, youth leaders, families and staff can expect:
The education, training and support needed to make this vision a reality

Foundation pays insurance for all enrolled in 4-H |
The Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation will once again pay the $1 American Income Life Insurance premium for currently enrolled Maine 4-H members and leaders. This accident policy covers all of your 4-H meetings, activities and events including full coverage while traveling to and from the member’s home and the meeting place. The Foundation will also pay the additional cost for Maine 4-H horse members and leaders. The policy covers April 1, 2008 through March 31, 2009. Please note that the AIL policy states: "Coverage requests for ages 5-7 should comply with your State 4-H Office guidelines," meaning youth ages 5 - 7 need to be in compliance with the Maine 4-H Clover Bud policies.

Update about 4-H and the 990N e-postcards |

Thanks everyone for your patience as we learn about this new process.

Vaughn Island 4-H Environmental Camp |
SPLASH! From the minute you set foot on Vaughn Island 'til the moment you leave, you're part of an exciting learning adventure! Our unique program offers three and four day tenting experiences where youth discover -- through their own natural curiosity and imagination -- the sights, sounds, smell and feel of Maine's rocky coast.
Designed with the whole child in mind, Vaughn Island 4-H Camp brings lasting memories. Living, working and playing together, campers make new friends and develop a sense of trust and responsibility for the whole group. An emphasis is placed on no-trace camping skills, cooperation, discovery of the island's plant and animal life, coastal heritage, and marine ecology. Did you get information about Vaughn Island? If not call the office or check out www.umaine.edu/umext/york/vaughnisland/vaughnisland.htm

National Directory of 4-H Materials |
The National 4-H Directory of Materials is a national database of 4-H materials designed to share national and state 4-H resources with educators, 4-H club leaders, teachers, youth and volunteers. This is a first of its kind online National 4-H Directory. Visit this directory often as 4-H continues to add new and useful resources to help you.
The National 4-H Directory is an online database that has hundreds of educational materials for 4-H youth, volunteers and staff, many that are part of the National 4-H Curriculum Collection. The directory contains both print and electronic products that cover a variety of subjects. The four categories of 4-H materials are:
4-H Individual Project Curriculum
4-H Curriculum for Groups
4-H Volunteer/Professional Development Materials
4-H Resources
You can do Keyword, Detail, Subject or Source searches. For example, if you do a Keyword Search, you would enter a single word or part of the word to search for. If you enter 'health' then you will get back results that contain: health, healthier, healthiest, and healthy. If you do a Detailed Search, you would search for resources by grade, level, material and more. Browsing by Source would let you view a list of organizations that create resources. You would browse by Subject to view resources by subject emphasis.
For more information, go to the National Directory of 4-H Resource Materials, accessed at www.4-hdirectory.org

It’s time to register for this year’s 4-H EDGE: Connecting Kids to Campus. This year’s 4-H EDGE is bigger and more exciting than ever!

You might learn about sensor technology, biomedical robotics, tracking whales with GIS, marine botany, technical theater, robotics, museum display design, and geometric origami to name just a few of the choices. There are math workshops, art workshops, new chances to explore the meaning of gender equity and the topic of bullying from a university perspective. Explore many faces of engineering – wood composites, civil engineering, biological engineering, lasers, and surface technology. You will stay over night in Oxford Hall, eat in the one of the University Commons, swim in the new Recreation and Fitness Center, see the new Physics Road show and have a great time with 4-H members from around the state.
The cost for this weekend will be $50 per person. Second and additional members from the same family can come for $35 each. To get a registration form, go to the 4-H EDGE website: www.extension.umaine.edu/4h/events/edge.htm or call your county office and ask to have one mailed to you. We expect to have the registration forms posted on-line on March 24. Deadline for registration is April 25.
If you are a 4-H member ages 16-18, we are preparing a day-long experience to introduce you to some of the information given to prospective UMaine students in the Open House program. You will participate in a campus tour, and then have an afternoon series of sessions giving you lots of information on what to expect as you go through the college application process and what life might be like as a new college student.
Also for 4-H adults – In order to make the 4-h EDGE weekend is safe and fun, we are asking for some volunteers to help chaperone the 11-15 year old portion of this event. Chaperones will arrive with the youth on May 17 and stay until the end of the program on May 18 and will be able to participate in the workshops and other activities or can choose to attend the parent sessions on Saturday if they wish. If we have more volunteers than we can use, we will try to make sure we have at least one from each county that has youth attending. We will notify you either way by the end of April. Chaperones will not need to pay the registration fee. You can volunteer to become a chaperone by using the Adult registration form found on the EDGE website.
