Horse Quiz Bowl

Are you interested in learning about horses, working as a team, making new friends, and traveling to Kentucky? Then you should tryout for the 2009 Maine State Quiz Bowl team!

What is Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl is a team competition very similar to the game show Jeopardy. Two teams of four 4-Hers are asked questions pertaining to horses, the first person to push their buzzer gets to answer the question, and gains one or two points for their team. Some questions will have a bonus question attached. Bonus questions usually have several parts and the entire team works together to answer. The team with the most point at the end of a match wins.

What is the Maine State Quiz Bowl Team?

Each year four Maine 4-Hers are chosen to compose the Maine State Quiz Bowl team. They are given questions to study and practice using the buzzers. The team then travels to the New England Regional Competition (held in Maine this year) and the 4-H Horse Round-Up held in Louisville, Kentucky. They will compete against the other five New England states at regionals and about 20 other states in Kentucky.

How will Quiz Bowl benefit me?

Competing in quiz bowl not only allows a 4-Her to learn more about their project and horses, but also teaches them to work as a team, learn leadership skills, set goals, develop study skills, interact with 4-Hers from other states, and travel. In a broader sense quiz bowl can create a better understanding of the horse industry, instill confidence and dedication, and even provide insight for a future career.

Do I qualify for the state team?

You must be currently enrolled in 4-H and be between the ages of 14-18 (4-H age). You should be willing to travel to meetings; study questions, and be dedicated to doing your best.

How can I try out for the team?

This year there will be a point system for selecting the quiz bowl team. The top four 4-Hers with the highest score at the end of April will make up the Maine State Quiz Bowl team, with the fifth highest score becoming an alternate.

How do I earn points?

Points will be awarded to 4-Hers who attend the monthly quiz bowl meetings, study the home work problems, and take the final test.

Meetings – There will be 3 quiz bowl meetings (one a month). The first meeting will be

Note: If you are interested in trying out for quiz bowl but you cannot come to any of the meetings because of the times or locations, please contact me and I may be able to work around your schedule.

Questions – questions will be asked at every meeting on the home work previously given. Regular questions will be for learning purposes and will not count towards team points. Point questions will be worth 2 points if answered correctly and 1 point if answered incorrectly. There will be approximately 30 point questions given at each meeting, and they will be clearly explained before they are read.

Final Test – there will be a test of 50 questions worth 100 points on “tryouts day” (this will be in April when the other National teams have their tryouts). The questions will be short answer and will cover material 4-Hers should have studied for home work.

Bonus Points – you can earn 10 bonus points for each ATM horse study session you attend (see news letter for dates, times, and locations).

What will be required of me if I make the team?

Team members will be expected to meet once a month and continue studying home work questions. 4-Hers will be expected to fly to Kentucky and compete. The cost of this trip is usually $200.00-$250.00. Team fund raising is an option to help defer the cost.
