Setting Up a 4-H Bank Account Handout

All clubs should keep the treasury in a bank account.

  1. Arrange a time to discuss your 4-H needs with a financial institution. (You may want to check a savings bank and a credit union for banking options.)
  2. Apply for an identifying number by filing an application for Employer Identification Number (FORM SS-4) (The SS-4 Form can be obtain from any Social Security Administration or IRS office.)
  3. Fill out the SS-4 Form.
Instructions for filling out the SS-4 form:
  1. Questions 1-5: Fill in your name and address and the 4-H club name.
  2. Question 8a: Type of Entity: Select “other nonprofit organization” and write in “4-H Club” and for Group Exemption Number (GEN) write in: “4-H Club”
  3. Question 9: Reason for applying: Select “Banking purpose” (the purpose would be “to deposit dues and/or funds raised by clubs for 4-H activities)
  4. Questions 16a-c: Only mark "yes" if you have filed for other EIN in the past. Otherwise mark “no” and then the form is complete once it is signed and dated. Once the form has been completed you can apply by telephone, fax or mail. Refer to the “How to Apply” Instructions in the appendix of the SS-4 instructions

  1. Open your 4-H account with bank or credit union

  3. Annually file Maine Certification of 4-H Clubs and Affiliated 4-H organizations under the National 4-H Federal Tax Exempt Status
