Home Horticulture is a major component of Extension work in Waldo County. Every year, hundreds of inquiries are made concerning the care and culture of garden plants and landscaping materials. Numerous insects and plant diseases are identified and cultural and chemical control mechanisms are discussed with homeowners. "What is eating my squash?" or "Why are my potatoes all scabby?" are typical questions that are responded to by either a telephone call or a fact sheet.
An insect and disease laboratory in Orono provides back-up for questions and/or problems that cannot be diagnosed here in Waldo County.
Numerous horticulture workshops are held for organizations, businesses and the general public. Every year, a day long "beginning gardening" series is held with the focus alternating between fruits, vegetables and ornamental horticulture. Also, in early spring, a "Spring Garden Celebration" is held which offers nearly twenty workshops during the day.
Master Gardener volunteer training has been conducted since 1988 in Waldo County. This extremely popular course provides intense horticulture training in return for volunteer time throughout the community. Most recently, Master Gardener training has also included a large number of staff from Johnny's Selected Seeds in Albion, an internationally known seed company.
