   Job Description

Purpose:

  • To help determine priorities, promote and evaluate Extension programs, which meet the needs and interest of area residents.

 Time Required:

  • Approximately 10 two-hour meetings held monthly from September through June. 

  • Meetings are held the second Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

  • New members are elected each year in September for a three-year term unless specified otherwise.

  • Standing and ad-hoc committees meet on an as-needed basis to assess items such as educational programs, the budget, nomination of new members, volunteer recognition and work plans.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Promote the work of Extension through:

  • Contact with citizens, county commissioners, legislators and other community leaders to report program impacts and

  • Assist in publicizing Extension programs to reach diverse audiences by delivering and posting program announcements and calendars in town offices, post offices and other public places within the volunteer’s represented area.

  • Become familiar with the staff and programs of the Waldo County Extension office.

  • Attend at least one Extension program per year.

  • Attend scheduled monthly meetings; Actively participate on two standing and ad-hoc committees.

  • Help develop the county’s plans of work based on high priority issues.

  • Help evaluate current programs; monitor on-going effectiveness in reaching plan of work outcomes.

  • Help prioritize staffing needs:

    • Make recommendations in selecting staff and hiring new educators, as necessary, and

    • Review and advise upon employee requests for sabbatical and educational leave.

  • Oversee the operations and preparation of the Waldo County Extension office budget.

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge Needed:                                      

  • Commitment to helping people help themselves                           

  • Work as a team member with the full board and two smaller committees.                                                                             

  • Interest in the programs of Cooperative Extension.                      

  • General knowledge of peoples’ needs and issues of importance in your geographic areas.

  • An orientation is provided in the Fall.

  • A member’s manual is provided to each member and is updated regularly.

  • Opportunities to attend leadership training.

  • Brochures and impact statements outline new and continuing programs.
