Five young men (age 14-16) participated in this 20-hour course. All participants passed the written test with a 95% or higher as well as their driving test. Completion of this course provides them with a Department of Labor Certification which allows them (as 14 and 15 year olds) to work on the back of the harvesters. To become certified, participants must complete the course, pass a written exam made up of 100 questions and pass the driving test which consists of a safety check, driving the tractor through an obstacle course, hitching an implement and then driving and backing up with the implement attached. These youth have the potential to make an average of $8000 during the harvest. The course is offered in collaboration with Cherryfield Foods, Inc.
