Make It With Wool in Maine!
Contest Information

yarnDiscover the beauty and versatility of wool and other natural fabrics and fibers!

Win prizes and awards and a chance to compete at the national Make It With Wool competition!

Categories for the Maine contest include garments, wearable accessories, and home décor, and are open to participants in the following age divisions:

  • Preteen (age 12 and under)
  • Junior (ages 13 – 16)
  • Senior (ages 17-24)
  • Adult (age 25 and older).

Winners in all categories will be awarded prizes, and winners in the garment categories, Junior through Adult, will be eligible to compete at the national level.

Make It With Wool in Maine Dates to Remember

January 1, 2009 – All items for the competition must have been made after this date.

September 30, 2009 – Submit your completed entry form with a 5” x 5” fabric swatch and the $10.00 entry fee.

October 10, 2009 – The Make it With Wool in Maine competition! All items must be available for judging by 10:00 a.m. on this date. If you have made a garment, you must model your garment or, if it is in the “made for someone else” category, that person must model it for you. An awards ceremony and reception will follow the judging, in late afternoon.

Competition Categories and Fiber Requirements

Garment Categories*

Juniors, Seniors, and Adults may enter

  • One-piece garment (Dress, jumper, outerwear jacket, coat, or cape)

  • Two-piece outfit (coat, jacket, cape, blouse/shirt, vest, or sweater WITH dress, jumper, skirt, pants, or shorts)

  • Ensemble (3 or more garments worn together at one time: coat, jacket, cape, blouse/shirt, vest, and/or sweater WITH dress, jumper, skirt, pants, or shorts)

Preteens may enter

  • Dress, jumper, skirt, pants, short, vest, sweater, shirt/blouse, jacket, or a combination of garments

Made for Others

  • Garments as described in categories above, made for another person who must model the garment, with the maker available to answer judges’ questions.

Wearable Accessories (open to all age divisions)

  • Hats

  • Scarves

  • Mittens, gloves

  • Socks

  • Bags

  • Belts, ties, suspenders

  • Shawls

  • Jewelry

Home Décor (open to all age divisions)

  • Rugs & Hangings

  • Quilts with wool batting and/or wool tops

  • Blankets and afghans

  • Upholstered Items

  • Vessels & containers

Pet Wear (open to all age division)

  • All items must be of 100% wool or wool-blend (minimum 60% wool or specialty fiber for each fabric or yarn used). Specialty fibers include mohair, cashmere, alpaca, llama, camel, and vicuna.

  • The entire garment (back, front, sleeves) must be wool or wool-blend fiber.

  • Trims, facings, linings, interfacings and underlinings may be of fabrics other than wool or wool-blend.

*Junior, Senior, and Adult winners in the Garment Categories are eligible to compete at the National level.
