The Gender Project
...explores gender socialization and equity issues and helps young people get beyond the often unhelpful messages they receive about what it means to be male and female today.

Four girls talkingAs parents, teachers, coaches, and other adults supporting young people, our work is about supporting them to grow up with all the skills they will need to be happy, successful adults. And yet, we know that the socialization of girls and boys in our culture supports them and hurts them in different ways as they grow up.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension offers:

  • Community Programs and Professional Development Seminars on gender socialization and equity issues, raising daughters and supporting girls, raising sons and supporting boys, classroom strategies and activities to raise awareness of gender differences, advocating for equity issues, and more.
  • Community Video/Discussion Series: Videos include "Heroes: Growing Up Female and Strong," "Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls," "Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity," and "Killing Us Softly III: Advertising Images of Women."
  • Gender Project NEWS: Newsletter packet, including upcoming programs, articles and educational material, opportunities to network. Developed 4 to 6 times per year, no cost to subscribers.
  • Individual and Community Support for local efforts to organize educational meetings, discussion groups, staff development, and training.
