Reinventing Skagway
http://www.eduweb.com/schaller/Skagway.html
By David T. Schaller
Skagway, Alaska where townspeople have recreated the era of the 1897-98
Klondike Gold Rush for tourists. Restoration runs deeper than anyone
intended, however, for they have also revived the town's original
economy--milking visitors. In fact, as I discovered on a visit there
in 1988, the inner workings of the town are a lot more faithful to
history than the facade raised for tourists. A cutthroat business
climate hides behind the false-fronted buildings, making Skagway a
good example of the demands which tourism makes of history.
