Girdling is an alternative to tree removal.

Figure 1 shows an example of a girdled tree done with an axe. The band should include at least one-half inch of wood and be about two inches wide.

Figure 2 shows girdling done with a chain saw: two encircling cuts will be required, to a depth of one to two inches.
