September Garden Activities:
· Get ready for next spring by planting your spring flowering bulbs now.
· While herbicides like glyphosate (Roundup®) are more effective at killing plants in the fall, once the plants have been hit by frost the herbicide is no longer effective.
· Speaking of frost, if you haven’t had one yet, put together a group of old bed sheets, remay or other covers to put over your tomatoes and other frost tender plants when frost threatens.
· Pick apples as they mature. If the night time temperatures go below freezing, wait until the sun warms them up before picking or your warm fingers will damage the flesh under the skin of the apple.
· After a light frost has killed the leaves of pumpkin and winter squash, but before a hard freeze, plan to harvest these vegetables. If there is an area on the pumpkin that has started to change to orange then they may finish coloring up if held in a warm area above 50o F.
