January Garden Activities:

· Inventory the seed that is left over from last year.  Check the October issue of this newsletter for a chart of the relative life expectancy of vegetable seeds.  If they are old, toss them out.  You can do a germination test to determine if the are viable.

· The mountain of garden catalogs should be arriving at your doorstep as you read this newsletter.  Now is the time to decide which vegetables, flowers, and fruits you would like to grow in this years garden.  Why not sit down with your neighbor and buy seed together that you can share?

· A source for bare root trees and shrubs is the annual Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District tree and shrub sale.  You need to contact them at 564-2321 and they will send you preorder information.  Then you pick up your selections at the SWCD office when they arrive.  It’s usually in May.

· If you started feeding the birds be sure to continue.

· Remember don’t feed the deer

· If you need something to deice your walkways consider using fresh kitty litter or fertilizer.  If you use fertilizer use it sparingly.
