April Garden Activities:
· Once the snow melts rake garden and lawn to clear off any debris (leaves, twigs, sticks, etc.)
· Test your soil if you haven’t done it within the past three years. Contact the office for our mailers.
· Consider building a raised bed to start your garden earlier.
· Prune fruit trees
· When strawberries start to grow new leaves pull the straw mulch to the aisle between rows so it will be near if you need to pull the straw over the plants to protect the blossoms from freezing.
· Monitor your seedlings that you have started and transplant when they outgrow their containers.
· Wait till the first part of May to start seedlings of your vine crops like cucumbers, squash and watermelon). Remember to use individual containers since these crops do not like to have their roots disturbed.
· If your seedlings are too tall and spindly it is a sign of insufficient light or excessive nitrogen. Move to an area with more light and reduce feeding intervals.
