Kennebec County, Maine
  • Forty-six teachers and 31 child care providers received training and materials to promote healthy eating and physical activity in their schools from University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
     
  • Research is being conducted to better understand the causes of adolescent obesity and how to develop innovative intervention strategies.
     
  • 4-H is the youth development program of University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
    • One hundred thirty volunteers donated 9,345 hours to working with youth in Kennebec County.
    • Twenty-five middle school youth participated in an after school program providing workforce preparation skills and experiences. Twenty high school teens participated in training to co-teach this middle school workforce prep program.
    • Twenty-five youth took the 4-H Tractor Safety Course to become Department of Labor certified to operate tractors and equipment on farms other than their own.
    • One hundred 4-H youth and volunteers participated in the Healthy Lifestyles walk at Maine 4-H Days held at Windsor Fairgrounds. The group walked over 800 miles in this two-day event.
       
  • University of Maine Cooperative Extension helps coordinate Maine Operation Military Kids, providing positive youth development programs and community-based support for children and families affected by military deployment.
     
  • Current work is being done on exploring alternative energy options for farms. This is a collaborative project among many organizations and agencies. It has included examining anaerobic digesters to convert dairy cow manure to electricity.
     
  • University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners have received in-depth horticultural training from university educators and industry experts. In return, they volunteer time to their communities.
    • Twenty-four new Master Gardeners are now conducting public service activities throughout the county.
