How to collect and submit samples for identification:

  • Whenever possible, collect entire plants, complete with flowers and/or fruits.
  • Please do not send just one or two leaves. Roots, flowers, stems, thorns, etc., often provide important clues to plant identity.
  • Fold your plant sample into a piece of paper or a plastic bag, and insert it into a mailing envelope.
  • If sending a sample suspected of being dermally toxic (example: poison ivy), write "caution" on the outside of the envelope, and enclose the plant sample in a plastic bag.
