Road shape Steep road, soft, berms on sides, no center crown; portions of the road wash out every year; cars are "swallowed whole." Not much of a crown; some potholes, berms, or ruts; road sometimes soft; no water diversions. Proper crown; has water diversions if road is long and steep; road always firm; no berms on sides.
Ditches Steep sides (less than 2:1 slope); nothing to stabilize soil surface. Sides somewhat steep (2:1 slope); only parts of the ditch are stabilized with grass or rock. Gentle side slopes (3:1); grass or rock lined with filter fabric to secure surface.
Ditch turnouts Road is steep and long with no ditch turnouts. Only a few ditch turnouts; they have channelized water, sediment delta at end. Frequent use of turnouts; spreads water in a thin sheet into a vegetated buffer.
